The World Through My Eyes

Photographs by young Mozambicans.

The highlight of the first phase of The World Through My Eyes was sharing the children's photographs with the public. The first chance for this was with a gallery exhibition at the Municipal Library in Chókwè from the 7th to the 16th of April. The opening was special because the children were able to share their photographs with friends and family for the first time. Also it took place on Mozambican Women's Day and was included in Chókwè's official celebrations. More than 80 people were present at the opening including municipal leaders, representatives from the Embassy, community members, project participants and their leaders. Limited space meant that only 50 photos were shown. Over the 10 days that the photographs were available for public viewing at least 250 visitors from the community visited the exhibition.

The second gallery showing took place in Maputo, Mozambique at the AMF (Mozambican Photographers Association) Gallery. The photographs were on exhibit between April 12th and April 19th. Maputo is about 140 miles from Chókwè so not all of the participants were able to attend the opening. Eight of the eleven made the trip along with the project leaders. They spent two days in the Mozambican capital meeting the press, going on a kid's television show, touring the city, being present at the opening and more. Present at the opening were over 90 guests including the United States Ambassador to Mozambique, reporters and friends. 60 images taken by the children and Professor Marcílio were shown at this exhibition. During the week more than 600 visitors saw the photographs. In total, over 850 people saw the two exhibitions, a notable success for a photography exhibition in Mozambique.
