The World Through My Eyes

Photographs by young Mozambicans.

Lucrência Francisco Cuna was born on April 23rd, 1988, in the district of Chókwè. She didn't really know her father because he died when she was less than a year old. Her mother Natália Jaime Ngovene died in 2002 leaving Lucrência and her six brothers and sisters as orphans. At age 16, Lucrência is behind in her studies because she was forced to stop when her mother could no longer pay the school fees. Now she is attending grade 6 at Mungone Primary School in Machel (Chókwè district). She enjoys playing hopscotch and her favorite subjects are Portuguese and math.

"I am in this project because I am orphan. I would like to thank my uncle who lives downtown as he is the one who let me know about it and helped me to be a part of it. This project was very important for me because aside from learning how to use cameras, I had chances to come to town. I live in the 3rd neighborhood, which is far from town but thanks to this project I came to town to see and learn many things. If I had my own camera I would take many photos because I feel I am able to do it. I would like to thank my teachers Blake and Marcílio for their help and support."
