The World Through My Eyes

Photographs by young Mozambicans.

Violeta Armando Chongo was born on April 21st, 1987, in Guijá district, which is located in Gaza province. Her father died leaving her with her mother and five siblings in Chókwè. In 1994, she began studying at Africa Amiga Primary School in Chókwè. She is old for a 7th grader being 17 years old. There are several reasons for this, such as a late start studying, failing of 2nd grade, not having proper documents to study 6th grade and then when finally able to study 6th grade, failing it. She passed 6th but due to financial conditions is not officially studying grade 7. This means that she is just observing for the year, nevertheless she does it with dedication. She enjoys praying and her favorite sport is soccer.

"I joined this project thanks my uncle Francisco. When I first came here to participate in this project, I didn't know what to do because my uncle hadn't told me. I felt that when luck knocked at the door I had to take it seriously. Today, thanks to my hard work and dedication I am able to take photos using manual and digital cameras. Making me the only person in my family able to do this. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my instructors Blake and Marcílio who have helped me arrive at the end of this course. Also I mustn't forget teacher Anita who introduced me to professional manual cameras."
